Pocket style nappies are a kind of halfway house between all-in-ones and shaped nappies. A waterproof, lined wrap style nappy that has an integral pocket which is then stuffed with absorbent material to the level required.
Great for those that don't have a tumble drier as the stuffing is removed for washing so you effectively have a flat nappy and a wrap to dry separately.
Stuffing
You can use anything absorbent to stuff a pocket nappy, it's about getting the balance between absorbency and bulk right for your circumstances. Here are some options:
Terry square - pad folded (very absorbent but bulky)
Prefold (absorbent, fairly bulky)
Shaped terry pocket nappy insert (medium absorbency, medium bulk)
Hemp pocket nappy insert (absorbent, slim)
Microfibre cloths (medium absorbency, very slim)

Thirsties Duo Diapers come in two sizes to give a good fit at each stage - this overcomes some of the common issues with "one size" nappies, namely that they are often too big on tiny newborns, and can be outgrown by hefty toddlers. The Thirsties Duo Diaper not only has two sizes, but each size has rise adjustment poppers, to enable you to customise the rise for your baby. Size 1 is a very credible newborn nappy while size 2 is a great choice for larger babies and toddlers - and often chosen by parents whose babies have outgrown "one size" styles.
The Duo Diaper comes with a 7 layer insert. The top 2 layers are microfibre, and attach to a thirsty 5 layer hemp insert with poppers so you can use them independently - for example you may prefer to use the microfibre insert on it's own for a newborn when absorbency is not the priority.
The PUL outer has a microfleece inner with openings at both ends of the nappy, making this pocket nappy extremely easy to stuff, and more importantly perhaps, very easy to separate for the wash, no matter which area has been most heavily soiled! The microfleece acts as a stay dry layer and gives a comfy soft feel against baby's skin.
Two sizes fit from 6lb to 40lbs.
